Meet our first customer

Josh Bonk - Lytros First CustomerOn the Lytro Blog, we try to share a little of Lytro’s story, about our business and employees. We’ve also shared the story of our first employees. Now, we’re excited to to be able to share the story of our first customer, Josh Bonk. Josh managed to place his order in the first minute after cameras went on sale on Lytro.com.

We asked Josh for a little background on his interest in the Lytro and he shared, “I first heard about Lytro reading through the techblogs Engadget and Gizmodo. I saw it and just thought it was something completely different. It really just seemed fun. I’m not an avid photographer; I’ll typically use my iPhone or let someone else take all the photos and just grab a copy for myself after its all said and done. I thought this would be a lot of fun for weddings and really when traveling.”

Gibson the MooseThis photo of Josh’s nephew, “Gibson the Moose,” is just the type of picture he looks forward to shooting with his Lytro. Our team is working hard so we can see Gibson imitate other native habitat in living pictures.

    • Glenn – We will start shipping the first Lytro cameras this month. The very first orders have an estimated ship window of Feb/Mar. Please refer to *your* confirmation email for your estimated ship window. Before your camera ships, you will receive an email indicating that your credit card will be charged.

  1. I see in all examples a choice of the focus point.
I was wondering if is possible to have everything in focus and have an extremely high depth of field in a photo?

  2. Is there any eta on shipping world wide. Well just Australia. What is the low light like? I doing lighting for concerts and this could have me so much time and effort. point and click and worry about focus later. Please let me know. Also a pc version would be good.

  3. I’m very interested in this when it comes to the UK market, but would like a bit more technical information regarding printing, as in earlier posts. We all know digital cameras can print larger if they have a higher MegaPixel rating, but how does this camera fare in that respect. Does it have a limit to its printed picture?

  4. The Lytro is the first camera that has made me say “Wow!”, in a very long time. I saw a reference on DPChallenge, and came to take a look. In the middle of a meeting, I was passing my iPad around to show other the pictures. I too am looking forward to a new way of imaging. I can spend hours exploring the images. It’s like seeing in a whole new way.

Disclaimer: I do not work for Lytro, but I do have a Hot Red one on order.

  5. How do pictures come out at night on this camera? I looked at the pictures on the website and none were at night, is this camera strictly for day time use?

  6. I’m in the “Heck Yeah, Lytro!” camp. Can’t wait for mine. It’s as though the entire technology was made just for me and my art.

I know it isn’t and that many others will love theirs as much, it’s just that when you see how I’ll be using it you’ll begin to think it was made just for me too.

  7. i just wonder …. none ask bout the shutter speed of the camera ???

I love to try this but ….. im in asia n im not gonna buy apple product just for the camera. i dont ilke the way apple create a ” toy ” that only works within their product !

  8. I too look forward to being notified as to when I can get a PC version of this.Yes I did preregister, and when the announcement was made I made a request concerning the PC version.I live in Alaska and I see this as a great way to show friends what it’s all about.

  9. So, when will the PC version of the software actually be available? It’s the only thing that’s keeping me from ordering. I have no intentions of buying an Apple just to support this camera, but I am very interested in the camera. I would think there are a lot of people in this category.

Please give us SOME idea other than 2012 of when the PC version will be available.

    Thanks
    Vince

  10. I too registered and received the notice of available of the Camera. But it is specified as for Apple Software only. I currently don’t have a working Apple Computer as mine died recently. I am currently using a PC Windows Machine and don’t have the ability to use the early model until it has support software that runs on a PC. That is the only reason that I did’t immediately purchase your early model. Please keep me registered for the camera when PC SW is available! Thanks very much for making such a cool product available to me! Ray Hallman

  11. I thought you could not be a paid customer yet since it was not coming out until 2012??? I signed up to be a customer very early on. I “bought” one the day you announced and went live with your online store. So I’m jealous. How can I get mine now instead of spring of 2012?

    • You are correct…no one has actually paid yet. Anyone who has placed an order will be charged when their camera ships. Josh was the fastest to place his order the day Lytro cameras went on sale.

      • Thanks for responding. I thought I had placed an order on the day is went on sale. I did this thru your website. My bad. Can I officially place an order and get one since its on sale?

        • Mark – If you’ve already ordered, then you should have received a confirmation email with details about your estimated shipping time. The first Lytro cameras will start shipping in early 2012.

  12. I think I may have been following the development of this camera for longer then most. I have been waiting for it to come to market since 2005. Back then it was refereed to mostly as a Plenoptic Camera. How did he qualify as the first customer? Was the first one to order the day it was available?

    • Yes – Josh placed the first order…within about 30 seconds. We were amazed at his speed so we reached out to ask him how that was possible. Those same tech blogs that tipped him off about the camera, tipped him off about our big announcement on the 19th with tweets. He visited our site and saw our temporary message and just kept refreshing until he could get through and buy.

  13. I can’t wait to have mine delivered to me in 2012!
Lots of hard work has gone into making sure it makes its way to me in Dubai!

    I’m sure it’d be awesome!
