The Gift of Lytro

We were pleasantly surprised by a recent Twitter post from @MikeTadros, who gifted a Lytro to his wife for her birthday. He wanted her to have something to open immediately, so he put his creative skills to work.

Since it’s the season for sharing, we’re re-gifting Mike’s paper Lytro for you to use, in all three colors:
(download are in PDF form)

We’re all hard at work to get the real deal in your hands as soon as possible. In the meantime, happy gifting!

Hey – we’re exhibiting at RSA @Moscone in two weeks and I decided that instead of having a draw to give away iPads or Kindles, we’re going to give away a Lytro!

Is there any way to get some official product images from you guys for our signage?

    • Lytro

Cool – there are product pictures available on our press page.

I bought one for my Brother as a Christmas gift. During the purchase process I was required to give my E Mail address. Because of the need to use Lytro.com to publish the pictures and the automatic registration with Lytros I had to use his E Mail address, not mine. Minutes after the purchase, he received an E Mail thanking him for the purchase. So much for the Christmas surprise. The website should have the option to purchase as a gift.

Sorry that happened to you. I’ll share your message with our web and support teams.

    @jimc you’re quite welcome! I hope she likes it : )

One of the reasons I’m so excited about Lytro is the technical spec question seems irrelevant. This is a new paradigm of photography. While I am interested in what it can do for snapshots and found compositions, I think the really fascinating prospect here will be to compose a field for the viewer to explore. I think as photographers we are going to be forced to rethink our art to make compelling use of light field photography… and part of that means thinking beyond printing. I may be going out on a limb, but a successful light field photograph will be one you don’t want to print.

Thanks, Mike! I’m in the same situation and was trying to build a wooden mock-up (and now it is firewood).

Pete’s questions mirror my own. The only reason I haven’t purchased a Lytro camera is because I haven’t been able to get answers to those same questions.

What is the resolution of the camera in Megapixels?

Can the files be saved in a printable format other than website quality after a focus point is selected? A screen capture just doesn’t cut it.

If the file can be saved, can it be saved as a TIF or other uncompressed format?

Where can we get more specs? Like will the program that allows viewing of the files also convert Lytro files to printable jpeg or similar files?
Once saved as a jpeg, what is the highest resolution that it can be saved as? What is the original image size and converted size?
Where can we see how the camera zooms.
    Thanks,
    Pete

While the first Lytro camera is designed for online sharing and interaction with living pictures, we know some folks still want to print. You can get lots more answers in our FAQs on our support site, including printing specs.
