Get Started Challenge #1 – Show Me

The Get Started Challenge is a 4-week series that uses themes and hashtags to help new Lytro camera owners get started and get inspired by each other. Check out all the Challenges.

For the first Challenge, we’ll create compelling re-focusable portraits of your friends and family by asking them to show you something they hold precious or interesting. Need help setting up this shot? It’s just like the sample shot Chris takes of his friend Katie in the “Get to know the Basics” video:

  • Zoom all the way out by making sure the zoom slider is all the way to the left.
  • Get super close to the object your friend is holding in their outstretched hand. You know you are close enough when the object starts to get visibly out of focus on your camera screen.
  • Frame their face in the background then press the shutter button.
  • Try shooting this picture a few times from slightly different distances to see how it affects your living pictures.

Share your favorite pictures. Post it to our Facebook Wall or share it on Twitter with the hashtag #lytroshowme. If we reshare your picture on Facebook, Twitter or the blog, we’ll send you a Lytro T-shirt.

Experiment. Get Creative. Happy Shooting!

Just got mine a few days ago. I read the way over-simplified instructions that came with the camera and I watched the tutorial videos, which are a bit better, and have been trying it out. Not with much success I’m afraid. I tried it in some low light situations and that is definitely not an option; no flash and no way to adjust for low light. Am I wrong there? is there anyway to adjust for low light, and if not, jut how low can I go? The exposure seems comparable to a 200 ISO, no? I should be able to at least get some decent indoor shots, right? Or do I always have to be outside at high noon? As for the living picture thing; Once I hit the shutter and take a picture. I can then tap on it like in the tutorial and refocus. Is the camera then supposed to create another file with that refocused image or do I still have just the one picture that I took with whatever is the latest refocus? Or do I have it backwards and all the refocusing has to happen before I snap the photo? I tried to do the refocus thing on an uploaded image and got nothing. Am I doing that wrong, too, or does the living photo thing die when I upload the image? Maybe I’m over thinking it, or the opposite, maybe I’m just an idiot, but whatever the case, I could use some detailed ‘how to’ instructions for this thing.

Oh boy! I made a mistake in buying this product. I don’t see well and bought the camera so I could take pictures of our grandson without worrying about focusing. I figured that I could refocus the picture after I shot it (while on my computer), then print it out for clear gorgeous pictures. I was swayed by the cumber of comments discussing the amount of information taken in by the camera, which I interpreted to mean that the resolution of the final product would be very high. The resolution is, in fact, only 72 dpi and photos wind up being only 6 x 6 inches.

The technology is thrilling and maybe someday I can buy a camera that allows me to refocus after the fact AND get a high quality photo. But right now, these photos are more for the Living Picture enthusiast and I am not one of those. Anyone want a good buy on a brand new Red Hot 16 GB Lytros?

I’ve been watching the video tutorials; simply incredible! Last week I was notified my camera is about two weeks away, I can hardly wait! My dad introduced me to photography about 50 years ago, I taught photography classes for years; I envision my Lytro camera to re-ignite my creativity full force!
