We’re proud to announce the newest update for Lytro ILLUM, available December 8, features a brand new editing tool never before possible with traditional photography. Lytro DepthFX enables photographers to replace the background of an image, insert an object or make image adjustments, all based on depth.
On our previous post, What is Light Field, we highlighted how the Lytro ILLUM captures the entire Light Field of the scene, which includes all the depth data of the scene. With the upcoming Lytro Desktop 5.0 update, you can edit images based on the different depths within it, while preserving the advantages of Living Pictures, such as variable depth of field, focus shift, perspective shift and animations.
Here are some examples of what you will be able to do using depth based adjustments:
Background Replacement: Easily change the background in a given image — essentially making the use of green screens unnecessary — while keeping the interactivity of the Living Picture.
SELECTING DEPTH TO BE REPLACED WITH NEW BACKGROUND IMAGE

Depth-Based Adjustments: Isolate areas and make editorial changes based on the Z depth information of each Living Picture. Adjustments include: exposure, saturation, color, contrast, hue and colorization.
