Behind the Pictures at The Lytro-izer

Last week we started a new holiday tradition with the advent of The Lytro-izer. People tweeted their funny, dramatic or just plain weird photos and used their 140 characters to try to convince The Lytro-izer to transform their regular photos into living pictures.

Great photos always caught The Lytro-izer’s attention. Along with a helpful team of human assistants, The Lytro-izer looked for photos that told a story on their own and inspired a creative response. “Modern Day Mad Men at Work” came from an employee at a 360i, a digital marketing agency, asking us to Lytro-ize a photo of two co-workers wearing fish hats and deadpan expressions on their faces. After doing some research, the Lytro-izer team discovered that 360i had also just been named “Agency of the Year” by a marketing trade organization. The Lytro-izer added a few “easter eggs” to be discovered – a trophy, the 360i logo, and even President Obama passing along his personal congratulations.

The Lytro-izer team switched from silly to heartwarming when @iSlutsky sent us a photo of himself and his wife standing on the porch of their first home. The photo was reminiscent of the classic painting “American Gothic” by Grant Wood. His Twitter profile showed that he works at a construction real estate company, so The Lytro-izer gave his wife a hard hat and added his company logo as their Christmas tree’s topper.

Jason Ramsey, who is the General Manager of School of Rock in Wichita sent a photo of some students on stage and we knew the Lytro-izer could turn their concert into a Rock-n-roll extravaganza. The Lytro-izer turned all of the amplifiers up to 11 and added Jason himself in the familiar Jack Black pose from the “School of Rock” movie poster.

Some modeling clay and the talents of the folks at Screen Novelties allowed us to recreate the images and memories that flooded in. The Lytro camera allowed us to personalize surprises in their living pictures, delivering a one-of-a-kind, shareworthy holiday card. Take a look at all of The Lytro-ized pictures at http://lytro.me and choose your favorite to share with friends.

The Lytro-izer, an Engaging New Holiday Tradition

During the past 3 days, Lytro invited photo submissions — funny, dramatic, or just plain weird — via Twitter with the hashtag #LytroMe to The Lytro–izer.

With an assist from Screen Novelties, creators of MTV’s Celebrity Death Match, The Lytro-izer selected its favorite photos and used the Lytro camera to transform them into shareable living picture claymation creations.

This one was inspired by @AbetheSausage‘s photo. You can see all of before and after pictures at http://lytro.me and check out the video below to see how it all happened.

It’s Here! See Your Pictures with Perspective Shift and Living Filters

The wait is over. The Perspective Shift and Living Filters update is now available for camera owners. After updating the Lytro Desktop Software, they will be able to share their own living pictures with Perspective Shift and Living Filters. When those pictures are shared, whether on Facebook, Twitter or via email, everyone can play with Perspective Shift and Living Filters, no special software needed.

We work with some amazing photographers who have had an advance opportunity to use these new features. Check out this video interview with Lytro Pro Shooter Trey Ratcliff, who runs the leading travel photography website, Stuck in Customs:

Challenge the Lytro-izer to Convert Your Photos into Living Pictures

We’re thrilled to launch The Lytro-izer, which we think is probably the greatest breakthrough in holiday technology since the invention of the artificial Christmas tree.

The Lytro-izer has already morphed some of the top pop culture moments of 2012 into living pictures. Now it’s your turn to put The Lytro-izer to the test.

For the next three days, from December 4th to December 6th, we’re giving you a once in a lifetime chance to be Lytro-ized. Simply send the Lytro-izer one of your favorite photos via Twitter with the hashtag #LytroMe. Make it good – funny, dramatic, or just plain weird – and if your photo is deemed worthy of Lytro-ization, a holiday miracle will begin. Armed only with the revolutionary technology of the Lytro camera and a few handfuls of clay, the Lytro-izer will transform your photo into a living picture claymation creation and tweet it back to you for you to share and show off.

To accomplish this feat, we’re teaming up with the artists at Screen Novelties. These award-winning stop motion animators have worked on many projects, from MTV’s Celebrity Deathmatch to the recently aired It’s a SpongeBob Christmas holiday special to Robot Chicken. Visit lytro.me to learn more about The Lytro-izer and submit a photo. You might just end up with the makings of a fun and unique digital holiday card that will be talked about by your friends and family all season long. Consider it our gift to you. We wish you a very happy holiday.

We just Lytro-ized the Top Pop Culture Moments of 2012

The Lytro camera is all about sharing moments in living pictures. So, as the year comes to a close, we thought we’d take a look back at some of the year’s top internet memes and moments in pop culture – only this time, we wanted to experience them as living pictures.

How to do that, you ask? We put our inventive brains to work to create The Lytro–izer. A time machine of sorts, The Lytro–izer is a breakthrough holiday technology. Armed only with the revolutionary technology of the Lytro camera and a few handfuls of clay, The Lytro–izer has brought these people and moments back to life. There’s Gangnam Style, Texts from Hillary, the famous (read: cute) Mars Landing Mohawk Guy, Obama’s victory for another term, Felix Baumgartner’s breathtaking space jump, and everybody’s favorite literary series, Fifty Shades of Grey. Now you get to experience them in a whole new way.

What’s even better? The Lytro-izer hasn’t finished its work. For the next three days, you can challenge The Lytro-izer to convert your most creative photos into living pictures. Visit lytro.me to get started and make your own mark on 2012 while there’s still time.

Perspective Shift and Living Filters Enhance Light Field Creativity

Today, we’re excited to share our newest breakthrough capabilities for light field creativity: Perspective Shift and Living Filters.

Perspective Shift allows Lytro photographers to interactively change the point of view in a picture after it has been taken. On a computer or mobile device, both the photographer and viewers can move the living picture in any direction; left, right, up, down and all around. When pictures with Perspective Shift are shared to the web, Facebook and Twitter, friends can experience Perspective Shift without needing any special software. Perspective Shift works on any light field pictures previously taken with a Lytro camera and with any new light field pictures.

“The new Perspective Shift from Lytro is fun and artistic! I’ve had a wonderful time running around with my Lytro camera to grab little scenes and bend them into this new way of seeing living photos. The idea that you can take any little scene and make it like interactive Matrix-bullet-time is really cool,” said Lytro Professional Shooter, Trey Ratcliff.

In addition to Perspective Shift, we’re also introducing Living Filters. These creative, interactive filters respond to every click of your mouse to show off your unique style and imagination. Living Filters lets you add drama, fun or artistic whimsy to your light field pictures – including pictures you’ve previously taken. Lytro photographers will be able to apply one of nine interactive filters, including Film Noir, Crayon, and Carnival, to their living pictures to change the look of the picture based on light field depth. Living Filters works on light field pictures you’ve previously taken with a Lytro camera and on any new ones you take. Learn more about the science inside Living Filters.

Both Perspective Shift and Living Filters will be available to camera owners starting on December 4th as a free Lytro Desktop update. Lytro cameras are on sale now for delivery before Thanksgiving with overnight shipping.

Light Field Capture Makes Living Filters Interactive and Amazing

Living Filters lets you apply stunning interactive special effects to your living pictures. These are filters like you’ve never seen before – filters that were never before possible. Living Filters uses light field capture to react to every click of the computer mouse with a playful response that shows off your unique style and imagination. There are nine creative filters, including the Crayon filter shown on this picture, that let you add drama, whimsy or artistic flair to your pictures.

You’ve probably played with popular filter apps that apply one effect to the whole photograph. For example, a black and white filter makes the entire photo black and white, or the app may combine effects to vignette the edges and boost the brightness in the middle. The results are static: every viewer sees the same result and the filter’s effect never changes.

Lytro’s Living Filters feature is different – more immersive, more interactive, and more fun. When you play with a Living Filter, you change the way the picture looks. When you share your pictures online, you and your friends can play with Living Filters simply by clicking on your picture. When viewed on a mobile device, the filter responds either to the tap of your finger.

Living Filters changes a picture based on light field capture and user interactions such as focus point, object depth, center of perspective, and more. For example, the Crayon filter has the in-focus area in color and the out-of-focus area in black and white. As you refocus, the color and black and white areas move, smoothly transitioning between the in- and out-of-focus areas.

Living Filters works with all living pictures, including any that you have taken before December 4, when Living Filters becomes available as a free Lytro Desktop update. You can buy a Lytro camera now with overnight shipping for delivery before Thanksgiving.

If you’d like to know more about how Living Filters work as well as future possibilities, read our whitepaper about the science inside Light Field Living Filters.
