Today marks another milestone at Lytro and an achievement that could very well change the future of filmmaking. We are proud to launch Lytro Cinema, the world’s first Light Field solution for cinema with breakthrough creative capabilities and unparalleled flexibility on set and in post-production.
Lytro Cinema is a radical technological departure from today’s professional cinematic cameras, delivering benefits that even the best of today’s industry tools are incapable of providing. Through the rich dataset captured by the system, it produces a Light Field master that enables a whole range of creative possibilities that have never before existed and enables multiple render options – including IMAX®, RealD®, Dolby Vision, ACES and variable high frame rates.
In a world of high production value expectations, getting the perfect shot can be very challenging. Lytro Cinema defies the traditional physics of on set capture by virtualizing creative camera decisions. Infinite creative choices can be generated in post-production, including unprecedented control over focus, perspective, aperture and shutter angle – recreating impossible shots.
With Lytro Cinema every frame in a live action shot becomes a 3D environment. So filmmakers can focus on the visual effects (VFX) and not the tedious task of merging live action with computer generated (CG) content. This opens up new creative avenues like Depth Screen – the ability to accurately key green screens for every object and space in a scene without the need for a green screen.
By using the depth information of a scene instead of color to composite foregrounds and backgrounds, it reduces the demand for cumbersome and expensive green screens on set. It also provides a much more comfortable acting environment, so the creative direction from a director can stay more constant. He or she does not have to keep reminding an actor or actress where they are or what they are looking at between takes.
This is just scratching the surface of what’s possible in the future of cinema. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with filmmakers and pushing creative boundaries with Light Field technology. We are proud and excited to premier the first short produce with Lytro Cinema in association with The Virtual Reality Company and its Chief Creative Officer and Academy Award winner Robert Stromberg, DGA, and its Chief Imaging Scientist and Academy Award winner David Stump, ASC at the NAB Show 2016. Watch a behind-the-scenes on set glimpse of “Life,” and we hope you can join us for our super session at NAB. To learn more about Lytro Cinema visit lytro.com/cinema.
